The Election Commission of India on Friday announced that polling to elect the next Vice President of India will be conducted on September 9, 2025, with counting scheduled for the same day.
According to the Commission, the last date for filing nominations is August 21, while candidature withdrawals will be allowed until August 25.
The post of Vice President fell vacant after Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned on July 21, the first day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, citing health reasons.
On Thursday, the Election Commission confirmed that it has completed preparations and finalised the Electoral College list for the election. In an official statement shared on X, the Commission said, “Accordingly, the Commission has finalised the Electoral College list for the Vice Presidential Election, 2025. These members are listed in a continuous serial order, arranged alphabetically based on the State/Union Territory of their respective Houses. The Electoral College list will be available for purchase at a counter set up in the Election Commission of India from the date of notification, which is likely to be announced soon.”
Electoral Process
The Vice President is elected by an Electoral College comprising members of both Houses of Parliament, through a system of proportional representation using the single transferable vote. Voting is conducted via secret ballot.
As per constitutional provisions:
When the Vice President’s term ends, the election is held before the term expires. In case of a vacancy due to resignation, death, or removal, the election is conducted as soon as possible. The person elected serves a full five-year term starting from the date of assuming office.
