August 6, 2024: After the fall of Sheikh Hasina and the Awami League regime all eyes are now on Bangladesh, who will be the next Prime Minister of the country? Political observers have already started speculating about this as several names have come to the fore.
Foremost among them is the Nobel winning economist Mohammad Yunus. The agitating students want him to head the interim government till elections are held in country and their leaders have already stated this. However, it is to be seen whether the economist fulfills their wishes or not though he has welcomed the fall of Hasina.
Second comes the name of Khaleda Zia, the BNP chief and former Prime Minister of Bangladesh. The former PM has been recently released from the jailed following order of the Bangladesh President. Although the 78-year-old lady is not keeping well off late some still see her as the next Prime Minister of the country.
Another name that is circulating in the political circle is Tareq Zia. Tareq is the son of Khaleda Zia and is a top BNP leader. He had to flee to Britain during Hasina’s rule but now he has returned to his home country as the regime changed.
Perhaps the coming days and the political situation prevailing in the country will soon decide who will be the Prime Minister of Bangladesh. And one cannot ignore the role of the military in this regard.
