TRUMP AND MUSK’S POWER STRUGGLE, SHOCKWAVES AROUND THE GLOBE

One is Donald Trump, President of the United States. The other is Elon Musk, the wealthiest person in the world. Their friendship has been long-standing, marked by highs and lows. Even during Trump’s second term, when Musk served in a government capacity, their relationship remained cordial. But recently, tensions had been simmering beneath the surface, and yesterday, Thursday, they erupted into open conflict.

This latest friction in their relationship is tied to controversies surrounding the Trump administration’s tax and spending bill. Things escalated to the point that there was even talk of Trump’s impeachment. On social media, Musk posted a barrage of messages, including personal attacks on Trump. While he offered no proof, Musk claimed that Trump was implicated in the “Epstein Files.”

The “Epstein Files” refer to sensitive documents connected to Jeffrey Epstein’s sexual abuse case. Epstein died by suicide while awaiting trial, and the files detail his travels and meetings with various people. Portions of the documents remain sealed, feeding public intrigue and fueling conspiracy theories.

In response, Trump took to his social media platform, Fusillade, to claim he had asked Musk to resign from his White House role. He also suggested that taxpayer-funded subsidies and contracts for Musk’s companies should be scaled back.

Now, the key question is: how did a friendship between the world’s most powerful leader and its richest man break down so dramatically? And what might happen next?

The Golden Days

Just a few months ago, Trump and Musk were hailed as an “unstoppable political force.” In the 2024 election, Musk spent almost $200 million to help re-elect Trump. In return, Trump invited Musk to join his administration. Musk was appointed to lead the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), tasked with slashing federal spending.

Curiously, the department’s name, DOGE, is believed to have been inspired by a popular internet meme that Musk was fond of—a dog-themed meme that gained popularity around 2020.

In the early days of Trump’s second term, Musk emerged as one of the administration’s most powerful figures. The public was quick to voice their concerns. Under Musk’s leadership, DOGE laid off thousands of federal workers and shut down various programs, including USAID, the U.S. agency for international humanitarian aid.

Musk’s influence grew so large that some Democrats began calling him “President Elon.” At the time, Musk and Trump presented a united front. In February, they sat down together for a Fox News interview, where they traded compliments.

Trump called Musk “a leader,” to which Musk replied, “I love the President. Let me make that perfectly clear.”

Over the years, Musk, originally from South Africa, began leaning more towards right-wing politics, criticizing Democrats and progressive policies. His purchase of Twitter (which he rebranded as “X”) underscored these views. He used X to oppose mass immigration and to fight what he perceived as efforts to censor free speech, especially around identity politics and COVID-19 measures. Musk even turned on Trump at times, posting that Trump was “too old” to be the CEO of any company, let alone the President.

In the 2024 Republican primary, Musk initially backed Trump’s rival, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, even posting in support of DeSantis’s gubernatorial campaign. However, after an assassination attempt on Trump in Pennsylvania in July 2024, Musk did an about-face. He announced “full support” for Trump and even appeared at some of his rallies.

The Rift Widens

That’s how their public alliance began. But the next chapter took a darker turn. Trump had welcomed Musk into the administration. But in April, Musk said he would be spending less time on DOGE. Then in May, he launched a scathing critique of Trump’s tax and spending proposals.

Recently, Musk called the bill “disastrous.” Yesterday, from the Oval Office, Trump told reporters, “Look, I had a great relationship with Elon. I don’t know if that will last.”

Asked directly about Musk, Trump said, “I’m deeply disappointed because he knew more about this bill than anyone else here. Suddenly, he’s turned on it.” Musk has dismissed those statements as untrue.

Musk has resigned from his position as head of DOGE. Trump even threw a grand farewell party for him in the Oval Office. But within days, their friendship was in tatters over the tax and spending bill.

What Lies Ahead

What’s next for Trump and Musk’s relationship is hard to predict. Musk has become a rising star among Republicans, but much of that is thanks to his bond with Trump. Now, he risks becoming a target of disdain from both Democrats and Trump loyalists.

Meanwhile, President Trump has faced criminal charges and scandals, but he has a knack for weathering them. He’s also shown he’s willing to use the full power of his office against rivals. Recently, he ordered an investigation into the Biden administration’s activities.

Trump has already warned about the vulnerability of Musk’s companies, including SpaceX and Starlink. “The quickest way to save billions in the budget is to cut government funding and contracts for Elon’s firms,” he wrote.

Musk may be ready to fight back. During his inauguration speech, Trump had spoken of a dream to see the U.S. flag planted on Mars. But just yesterday, Musk said he might scrap NASA’s plan to use SpaceX rockets for missions to the International Space Station.

In the Senate, Musk could find allies among fiscal conservatives to help block Trump’s tax and spending bill.
