The Enforcement Department of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) carried out a targeted campaign on Wednesday against battery-operated rickshaws operating in violation of municipal laws.
During the operation, several e-rickshaws were seized for operating at excessive speeds and failing to comply with light vehicle regulations. These enforcement actions were taken in line with the resolutions passed during the GMC’s Mayor-in-Council (MIC) meeting in 2023.
According to officials, some rickshaw owners have been generating significant income—reportedly earning lakhs of rupees daily—by renting out hundreds of battery-operated rickshaws at a daily rate of Rs 350. Many of the drivers come from districts such as Barpeta and Dhubri, using this livelihood to support their families.
GMC has reiterated its commitment to ensuring road safety and regulatory compliance for all vehicles operating within city limits.
